A quick scan of the e-Petitions website reveals a good number of libertarian or libertarian-compatible e-Petitions. Reassuringly they seem to be attracting a reasonable number of votes.
- Britain wants referendum to leave EU – membership of a federal social democratic state is not likely to produce a minarchy.
- Repeal the 1997 and 1988 Firearms Acts – seems like a good start.
- Legalise cannabis – I like this petition as it explicitly makes it an issue of liberty.
- Remove the ban on gay blood donation – seems to be a matter for individual doctors
- Absolute right to self-defence within ones home – there should be very few limits on what can be done to somebody who is found in your home
- Stop giving aid to India– state aid to India implies prison for people who think India can manage on their own and who might otherwise withhold the money, that is simply not justified
- Decriminalise recreational drugs – worked in Portugal. Well debated already.
- Abolish the TV licence fee by 2013 – just because we like Dr Who, it doesn’t make it okay to take funding for it by force
- Criminalisation of squatting – not all theft is state sanctioned.
- Legalize Euthanasia – is an issue I’m personally less comfortable with but which is clearly an issue of self-ownership being violated.
Some others worthy of consideration:
- Withdraw from the European Human Rights Act – Individual rights do not include freedom from accountability, but a debate on changing the definition of human rights would lead to the spread of correct ideas.
- Legalise Gay Marriage – I was uncertain about this strategically, a clear call to stop being involved in marriage at all is my preference.
