Ed would be wasting his time trying to talk the likes of me round to supporting his party, and I suppose he has done a good job in keeping the faithful happy. His task is to respray the scratched and tarnished vehicle which Blair and Brown drove into the mud.
So, to replace New Labour, we have One Nation Labour, reminding me of a Varoomshka cartoon from the early ‘70s, wherein the three party leaders were busily poring over policy documents their rivals had thrown out. But that was the good old days when parties had policies. Now they only have slogans. Nevertheless, recycling is the name of the game, so Ed reinvents One-Nationism for a new generation.
However, leave aside the slogan and the rhetoric is the same as ever. Ed is not dumping the class war, the one nation he is seeking is what is left once the class war is finally won.
