  1. A real problem is the lack of real shareholders – most companies now (not in the dim and ancient times of my youth) are not mostly owned by individual shareholders, they are mostly (the vast majority of the stock) owned by institutions (such as pension funds).

    I wrote some long comments on this when the matter came up (yesteday) on the Samizdata blog.

    Basically the problem is that taxes (such as inheritance tax and capital gains tax) have undermined individual shareholders.
