Discussion: French Election

As I write Hollande has 27.5%, Sarkozy 26.6% and Le Pen 19.9% with one third of the vote counted. It is seen as inevitable that Hollande will eventually win in the second round simply because he isn’t Sarkozy. He promises “less austerity and more growth”, which sounds absolutely wonderful, but I wonder how he’ll manage that trick?

  1. He won’t as we all know. He will just attempt to kick the can down the road a little further. The only thing positive that may come out of it is the derailment of the Euro project and it’s diabolical economic policies. It may also send a significant warning shot across the bows of Ms Merkel.

A Hollande win would almost certainly lead to some sort of renewed crisis in the Eurozone. Should be interesting…

  3. I’m confused by this morning’s papers. They seem shocked by Le Pen’s 18% despite her father scoring 17%.

Does this really say anything about changes to in French attitudes to immigration or are they just as protectionist as ever and Le Pen has just hoovered up an extra 1% thanks to a weak Sarkozy?

UK should be a low tax, low red-tape haven. The Hong Kong of Europe.

The way things are going, a mission to Mars is probably the only way for mankind to escape.

  5. The media are shocked by the F.N. candidate getting 18% and comming third – because they (especially the BBC/Guardian – which is basically the same organization) were obsessed with the Communist candidate, who (they were convinced) was going to come third.

As usual the Communists proved to be more popular with the media (and the “educated elite”) than with ordinary voters.

The socialists are indeed promising absurd things (30 hour week, no cuts in government Welfare State spending – everything to be paid for the by “the rich”, and on and on), but really this is an anti Sarkozy vote (and an anti establisment “right” vote – the traditional right having held the office of President of the Republic for many years) not a positive vote for the absurd policies being offered.
