Richard Murphy’s upside-down world

Tax accountant Richard Murphy has something of a cult following amongst libertarians, for the masochistic pleasure to be gleaned from his sage-like utterances. If I didn’t know he existed in the flesh, I’d think him a straw man, invented by Tim Worstall. Here are a few of his tweeted gems from yesterday:

Where did this absurd myth that the gov’ts money is “ours” come from? Taxes belong to the gov’ts and no else. You pay it because you owe it

Try not paying your tax. Just tell the Court you decided you really didn’t feel like it & see what they say

You own your net income after taxes: you have no legal right to claim taxes owing are your property. Quite clearly they are not

Tax is not theft, never has been and never will be

  1. “Tax is not theft” – no it is extortion.

People “owe” the government taxes in the same way that the residents of Chicago “owed” Al Capone “Protection Money”.

  2. Agreed.

Murphy defines “property” as what ever government regulations and government courts leave a person.

To him if the government says “this is not yours – it is ours” that settles the matter.

It is Legal Positivism – Thomas Hobbes and co.

Eventually the state turns on such crawling insects as Richard Murphy – and they deserve no help when it does.

After all they have justified everything the state does to other people – so when the state takes all their own stuff (or even just kills them and uses the bodies for dog food) that is nothing to be upset about.

  3. His prime tweet today ” I admit that the idea that a Central Bank should not serve the interests of a government seems alien to me”. I don’t know where to begin! No point arguing with him, he’s not going to change even when proven wrong time and again.
