Speaker Profile: Jamie Bartlett

Jamie Bartlett is a blogger, journalist and think tank manager. He is perhaps most famous for the book Dark Net, which profiled the social institutions present within TOR. This work was featured in a TED talk, shown below, which demonstrates Jamie’s particular talent for both open and fair minded analysis of people different from himself.

In his books, and for the think-tank Demos, Jamie has attempted to understand a wide range of groups social meda “racists” such as the EDL, “cam-girls”, the Five Star Movement, crypto-anarchists, dark-net drug-dealers, techno-futurists working on immortality, militant environmentalists, libertarians founding new countries, autonomous cooperatives, pioneering users of hallucinogenic drugs, transhumanists and self-harmers.

At Demos Jamie is director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media. He writes regularly for the Telegraph and is now promoting his second book “Radicals”.  I have invited him to talk in more detail about the radicals in his book, and to tell us what he thinks makes a successful radical movement.
