My talk on Friday

Brian has written the following in his regular email to dozens of senior libertarians announcing a talk at his home. I’m quite chuffed that it mentions me:

In this month of July, the last Friday comes early, on the 25th. And on the 25th, our speaker will be Simon Gibbs.
I recently emailed Simon thus:
“The agenda is: What makes you tick as a libertarian. Why do you do it, rather than just living a regular life, which you are plainly capable of doing very well? What are the key ideas that you arrived at that turned you into the libertarian activist that you are?”
“I’m guessing that Ayn Rand is in the mix somewhere, …”

Simon replied:

“Rand will be in the mix, but in ways I hope are surprising. …
“I’d like to deliver a talk with the title “The Libertarian Home project”, since pride is a virtue. I will tell a bit of the story, hopefully not too much of it, and make a case both for Randianism and for the project and its very many features.”

This sounds like everything I had asked for, and more. Not just why Simon does Libertarian Home, but how.

If you’d like to come, contact Brian Micklethwait, the event is in his home in PImlico.

  1. Simon, did it happen? Brian didn’t post his usual announcement at Samizdata, and I haven’t seen anything on

I have to be honest here. There are a few, a VERY few, events that I would pull a Florence Chadwick and swim 3,000 mi. east across the Pond to attend. One would have been Paul’s presentation here, thank you & the Missus for giving us the video, and another your talk at Brian’s.

I hope to the Great Frog that Brian posts at least an audio recording, preferably with Q&A.

    1. Sorry, Simon, I’m an idiot. I’d like to say “I can’t believe I did that!”, but unfortunately I try to avoid telling blatant lies.

I lodged a gentle hint on Brian’s page about posting a recording. :>)

      1. Well his post was mostly about cats.

The talk was not recorded, which is Brian’s policy.

I’m glad you like the idea of the talk. To be fair I’m not sure it was worth the trek from Chicago.

      2. Well then, Simon, you will just have to provide us with the text of your talk yourself. 🙂

The swim wouldn’t have been a problem, but at my age I surely cannot be expected to deal with Chicago O’Hare, nor with Heathrow either. :>(
