Live Stream “Donald Trump and the Decline of America”

The election of Donald Trump has both shocked – and divided – the libertarian community. His election reflects a tangled web of factors – his personality, the state of mainstream politics, people’s feelings about race and culture. Even hard data paints a confusing and contradictory picture.

Our event on Monday Dec 5th will be addressed by Yaron Brook, himself horrified by Trump’s victory, who will explain his reaction from a uniquely philosophical perspective and describe how best to analyse events of this kind. What matters most? Image or Policy? Does Trump’s success reflect the decline of America or symbolise it?

    What Federal Government Departments or Agencies does President Elect Trump wish to abolish? None at all.

    There was a candidate who proposed getting rid of lots of government departments and agencies – Ted Cruz. And Senator Cruz LOST.

    The people, even ordinary Republican Primary voters, do not want a smaller government – they want a government that will “work for them” (that is what Mr Trump promises). The truth is this brutally simple.

    This is not say that Hillary Clinton was not worse – after all Mrs Clinton promised vastly MORE government spending and regulations. But those people who look for a roll back of the state from President Trump look, I believe, in vain – and Mr Trump will not try and roll back the size of government because (it appears) that is NOT what most people want.

    There are any number of agencies that could be cut in order to “roll back the State,” at least a little bit. The problem is that the voters who want to cut an agency or sixteen don’t agree on which one even to start with, and lacking a leader (President) who is stubborn and independent-minded enough to take the bit in his teeth and pick his own choice, and then actually DO it, no cut will happen.

    (Although it’s at least plausible that > 50% of the actual voters don’t want any of them cut. Especially when “libertarians” think they have some kind of moral high ground by refusing to participate in voting, and many libertarians and other pro-downsizing folks feel too defeated to haul themselves to the polling place; and especially especially when Up-and-Coming Rising Young Philosophers chant over and over, “Your vote won’t make a difference anyway … Your vote won’t make a difference anyway … Your vote won’t make a difference anyway … so don’t bother.” )

      Yes Julie.

      The voters were offered a candidate (Ted Cruz) who proposed getting rid of a string of Government Departments and Agencies.

      The voters said NO – they prefer a candidate (Donald Trump) who will “make all their dreams come true” and will “make everything wonderful” for them – by putting in better managers to head the Federal Government Departments and Agencies.

      It was a clear decision in the Primaries – the voters have made their decision.

      At least it was not Hillary Clinton – who argued (in effect) that government was much too small – and should be much bigger.
